Introduction

This section presents indicators describing the health of the population, including longevity, healthy longevity, and mortality.

Longevity

Life expectancy is the average number of years a person would be expected to live if the age-specific mortality rates observed in a given year remained unchanged throughout their lifetime. It is one of the most widely used indicators of population health and overall living conditions.

The first graph shows life expectancy at birth for the total population and separately for males and females.

The second graph shows life expectancy at age 65 for the total population and separately for males and females.

The third graph shows the remaining life expectancy at each age for the total population and separately for males and females.

Healthy longevity

Healthy longevity measures not only how long people live, but also how many of those years are spent in good health. Unlike life expectancy, which is based solely on mortality, healthy longevity combines mortality with information on people's health and functional limitations.

The first graph presents healthy life years for males, females and the total population. The indicator measures the number of years that a person can expect to live without limitations in their usual activities, assuming that the mortality and health conditions observed in a given year remain unchanged. The graph can be viewed at birth, at age 50 and at age 65.

The second graph presents healthy life years as a share of life expectancy. This indicates the proportion of expected lifetime that is spent in good health. The indicator highlights that increases in life expectancy do not necessarily translate into an equivalent increase in the number of healthy years.

The third graph presents self-perceived health. Individuals are asked to rate their general health as very good, good, fair, bad or very bad. Self-perceived health captures aspects of physical and mental wellbeing that may not be reflected in objective health measures and provides an important complementary indicator of population health.

Mortality

Mortality indicators describe the frequency, timing, and causes of death in the population. Together, they provide a broad picture of population health and complement measures of life expectancy by showing how mortality is distributed across ages and what causes account for most deaths.

The number of deaths recorded each year is an important component of population change, but it is also influenced by the size and age structure of the population. An increase in deaths does not necessarily indicate worsening health, particularly when the population is ageing. The next graph shows the annual number of deaths in Greece.

The age distribution of deaths shows at what stages of life mortality is concentrated. As life expectancy improves and the population ages, an increasing share of deaths occurs at older ages. The next graph shows how deaths are distributed across age groups.

The infant mortality rate measures the number of children who die before reaching one year of age per 1,000 live births. It is an important indicator of maternal and infant health, living conditions, and access to and quality of healthcare. The next graph shows the evolution of the infant mortality rate in Greece.

Causes-of-death statistics show which diseases, medical conditions, and external factors account for recorded deaths. They help identify the principal health risks faced by the population and how their relative importance changes over time. The next graph shows the number of deaths by cause.
